- Listing of Napa wineries.
- Listing of Napa tasting rooms. Note that for several, including Domaine Chandon and Robert Mondavi you can reserve your tasting online…yes, for the most popular wineries, reservations are a good idea.
There are a variety of wine tasting experiences available in Napa, from the wine bar walk-up to the sit down tasting -- read a description of what you might encounter here. The fact that this sort of explanation is necessary is part of what creates the sort of highly organized/high strung almost theme park vibe that other smaller wine areas like to compare themselves against favorably. (One of the most commonly heard phrase in other US wine areas: “It’s not like the Napa Valley here.”)
On the other hand, it's important to point out that not every Napa winery is a bells-and-whistles show, and a winery that's visitor friendly is not necessarily putting out wine of lesser quality. In fact, Napa is a great place for wine touring beginners to visit, in part because several wineries offer other attractions (there's art and architecture at Artesa, for instance), in part because the tasting room staff are well-trained in providing an education in the basics of wine tasting, and in part because the wine is excellent.
Napa County is home to 16 American Viticultural Areas, or AVAs: Atlas Peak, Calistoga, Chiles Valley District, Coombsville, Diamond Mountain District, Howell Mountain, Los Carneros, Mt. Veeder, Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, Spring Mountain District, Stags Leap District, Yountville and Wild Horse Valley.
Communities within Napa Valley include: American Canyon, Napa, Lake Berryessa, Yountville, Oakville/Rutherford, St. Helena, and Calistoga. (Read more on each here.)
Among these, Yountville is the most notable for foodies, as it’s home to one of the most celebrated restaurants in America, The French Laundry, although St. Helena is also well on the radar screen, as its home to the Restaurant at Meadowood, the other three-star Michelin restaurant in the San Francisco Bay Area.
