Lobster Safari on a Lobster Boat in West Sweden

Fishing for Lobster in Swedish Waters

By , About.com Guide

The word "safari" lends a touch of excitement when its appended to almost anything -- but when it's a lobster safari, it's a foodie heaven.

There are several outfitters that offer lobster safaris on Sweden's west coast. This particular lobster safari was in the quaint fishing village of Fiskebäckskill, offered by the Gullmarstrand Hotel and the Brygghuset restaurant. It starts with getting into the provided fishing gear -- warm jump suits, rubber boots, life jackets -- and then scrambling on to the lobster boat, where you head out to sea and start hauling up pots and resetting them. (Warning: this is not for people who are easily seasick, this is real live ocean.) After a few hours, it's a return to the boat house for savory mussel soup, and then off to Brygghuset restaurant for a lobster dinner with all the trimmings. The package includes overnight accommodations at Gullmarstrand hotel plus two breakfasts, lunch and a whiskey tasting. It costs about $400 US.
