The market building dates to 1845, when it was the Toronto City Hall, and several renovations have led it to its current form. In fact, there are two structures, the South Market, which is pictured here, and has over 50 vendors selling prepared foods, butchers, cheesemongers and so on, and the North Market, which is used for a Saturday farmer's market.
Must-eat highlights include a visit to Carousel Bakery and Sandwich Bar for a peameal bacon sandwich -- peameal bacon is a Toronto specialty, it's back bacon, dredged in cornmeal. Carousel's sandwich is served on a soft Portuguese bun with honey mustard, and don't miss their butter tarts for dessert.
Also be sure to hit Kozlik's Mustard, A Bisket A Basket (which makes delicious preserves), and Scheffler's Delicatessen and Cheese, for browsing (and sampling) Ontario and Quebec cheeses.
