Tasmania Wine: Morilla Winery Offers Upscale Accommodations

Tasmania's wine is a growing force in the Australian wine scene. The state's cooler climate allows for wine to take its time ripening, and also allows for different varietals than you'll find in the rest of the country. Here, look for pinot noir, chardonnay, and reisling.(Although warmer temperatures of late have led to more plantings of shiraz and merlot.) Also look for sparkling wine, for which Tasmania is well known.

The wine industry in Tasmania divides itself into four wine touring regions. The north, near Launceston, offers the greatest concentration of wineries -- there are two areas here, the North West Wine Route, and the Tamar Valley Wine Route. But there's also plenty of sipping and swirling to be had in the Southern Wine region, near to Hobart, which is where Morilla winery pictured above is located, as well as the East Coast region, near the Freycinet Peninsula.
