Should You Tip the Owner of a Restaurant?

How much do you tip after a meal? A simple question, with so many complicated and potentially controversial answers.  Folks have been sounding off about their feelings on tipping over here, and reader Gina took the opportunity to ask a very good question: What about tipping when the owner or the owner's spouse is your server?

This isn't a situation that happens very often, but it does come up in small family-owned restaurants, and so here's how to tip an owner/server, and family.  And, dear readers, if you have any a question about tipping protocol, restaurant etiquette, or any other question about conduct relevant to culinary travel, please fire away.

I’ve been a server for many years and have many thoughts on all kinds of things pertaining to restaurants and customers – most especially, tipping.

However, I think it best to direct you to my fave video blog on YouTube right now. He’s this waiter who teaches people how to be better customers. He covers everything from tipping, not coming into the restaurant close to closing, people who camp too long at their table, and so on.

He’s bitter, funny, cute, angry, foul-mouthed, satirical, and – most of all – truthful.

I’ve seen his channel grow from 20 subs to almost 2,000! He deserves more, I think.
