The restaurant: Jesse in Shanghai
The dish: Roast Pork belly
The story: For traditional Shanghainese food, I was told to visit the original location of the mini-chain Jesse, or Ji-Shi in Chinese -- the one on Tiang Ping Road. I was also told that I had to try one particular specialty -- roast pork belly, also known as "red pork belly". I didn't need much convincing! Shanghainese food is often derided for being too sweet and fatty, but these two qualities were in perfect balance in this addictive dish.
