When I lived in Pennsylvania a decade ago, I was first introduced to the (seemingly redundant) term "water ice". It seems that every region has its own variation of flavored frozen water -- in New York City, I grew up eating Italian ices, which we always pronounced "icees", in Hawaii, it's called shave ice. And in Alaska, there's "eskimo ice cream" which is snow mixed with lard (or reindeer fat or seal oil) and berries, although that should probably be in a category all of its own.
